Guest Speaker Tansy Miller
Subject Citizenship
Tansy Miller is a Project Development Officer who works at the Norwich office at St. Vedast House, 5-7 ST Vedast Street, which is off Prince of Wales Road.
Each Citizens Advice Bureau is separate and so the projects they carry out will vary.
The charity began just after the Second World War helping people whose houses were bombed.
It was decided that projects should aim at helping young people who mainly need help with debt and employment. Government funding enables the project to function.
Young people can obtain help directly, from the Website (www.askcab.org.uk), or from school if teachers have requested CAB to work in their school. Pupils at KS 3 & 4 will be taught Citizenship as part of the NC but will not be examined on the subject.
Norwich CAB has worked in 20 high schools in Norfolk which have either a) had CAB in for a whole day, working on topics such as finance b) received information from CAB, which is followed up by a talk, or c) used the CAB Website to obtain resources, which are copyright free and in Microsoft Word format.
Sometimes the CAB officer will give a talk or involve role play. These sessions can vary from 15 minutes to an hour. Pupils can ask questions and receive advice.
All visits from CAB are FREE to schools
Citizenship covers Crime, Personal Finance, Employment, Global Issues and Community Involvement.
Students over 16 may become more involved with a two week work placement and, as a charity, CAB welcomes volunteers of all ages.
If you would like help or further information you can contact Tansy Miller by e-mail (resources@askcab.org.uk or t.miller@ncab.org.uk) or by phone on 01603 697637.
Many thanks to Peter Ayers for this report of the meeting.
